Canada Cup Results 2004

SASKATCHEWAN PROVINCIAL ROWING TEAM BRINGS HOME THE CANADA CUP – FOR THE FIRST TIME!

After a rain delay on Saturday, the rowing resumed at the Olympic Basin in Montreal Sunday for the Coupe Canada À L’ Aviron Rowing Canada Cup this past weekend. Saskatchewan rowed past the competition bringing home the Women’s Aggregate Trophy, the Men’s Aggregate Trophy and the crowning glory, Team Sask won the over all points trophy, Canada Cup, for the first time in the history of the Cup.

The team, comprised of mainly junior athletes preparing for the 2005 Canada Summer Games, demonstrated their passion, dedication and commitment to the sport and the overall team. “We went hoping to do well, to show the juniors what it is like to compete at a high level, to show the rest of the country that we were a team that has trained hard and competed hard all season. We dreamed of the Cup, but to be called to the podium to receive the Cup was beyond belief” says Coach Ian Mitchell.

The team will be at the Royal Canadian Henley in St. Catharine’s to compete on an international stage from August 2 – 8.

Under 23 Rowing Championships

Haver and Jarvis win BRONZE MEDAL

Lightweight Men's Double

1 Hungary, 2 Portugal, 3 Canada

Canada have been having a great year and John Haver and Morgan Jarvis continued this trend by taking off at an opening fast pace. However, by the half way point Hungary's Peter Lorinczy and Kornel Szabo had caught up to the Canadians with Nuno Mendes and Pedro Fraga of Portugal also holding on to the pace.

Lorinczy and Szabo then switched gears and moved away from Canada and Portugal leaving the real battle on for second. Portugal had the better sprint to finish second and in the process won the first medal for their country at this regatta. A fading Canada did all that they could to stay in the medals over a last ditch effort by Poland.

Saskatchewan Rowing Association Press Release - August 6th, 2004

Saskatchewan Rowing on the International Stage

The World Rowing Under 23 Regatta in Poznan, Poland

The Malta Regatta Course in Poznan, Poland is hosting the World Rowing Under 23 Regatta from August 6 to 8. Coming off the win of his fellow team mates at the Rowing Canada Aviron Canada Cup competition, John Haver from the Saskatoon Rowing Club competed in his first international race. "I can't believe the rowing site, I can't believe all the other national rowing team's......I can't believe that I am about to race for Canada at the World championships" stated an exuberant Haver.

As a strong head wind blew, heat two got under way for the Lightweight Men's Double with Canada's John Haver (Saskatoon) and Morgan Jarvis (from Winnipeg) taking a huge lead in the first quarter of the race. Rowing the distinctive black boat with riggers situated behind them Haver and Jarvis were well in control. Behind them Great Britain and Hong Kong challenged each other in second and third, but the Canadian's remained in front and move directly to the semi-final.

The World Under 23 Regatta is a showcase of up and coming athletes. With annual participation of approximately 40 countries and 600 athletes, these U23 rowers are the future of rowing and many will go on to compete at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

Tops n Bottoms 2004

Novice members of the Saskatoon Rowing Club recently travelled to Kenora ON., for the Tops n Bottoms novice regatta. According to Provincial coach Ian Mitchell with the support of the SRA, 25 Juniors from PA, Saskatoon and Regina competed in Kenora. These Juniors were required to show a commitment to their training and must be under 18 yrs of age to be eligible to attend. As it turned out, all the Juniors in attendence were JRB and qualify for the Canada Games in 2005. This speaks well for our province. There were many personal bests and the following 1st place finishes.

JRB Womens 4X

Danica Jorgensen
Jaime Trainer
Natassja By
Stefanie Donison

JRB Mens 4X

Neil Jansen
Logan Fraser
Andrew Leach
Mike Reggeti

JRB Womens 2X

Danica Jorgensen
Stefanie Donison

It is also nice to see PA return to the Regatta circuit. It was very hard to get Jesse and Keegan to call themselves Saskatchewan instead of PA at the start (as the officials told me). The Juniors were identified and coached by Danica Jorgensen(PA), Cory Niefer(S'Toon) and Ian Mitchell(Regina). They represent the future of Saskatchewan Provincial Rowing. Congratulations all!
